Religious Education

Religious Education at St Swithun’s
At St Swithun’s Catholic Primary School, Religious Education (RE) is at the heart of our school life.
It is central to our mission as a Catholic community and shapes everything we do.
Our Curriculum
  • We follow God Matters, the Catholic Diocese of Portsmouth’s programme, alongside the new Religious Education Directory (To Know You More Clearly), launched by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference.
  • We are actively transitioning our planning and resources to align fully with the new Directory by September 2026, with governors monitoring this progress.
  • We also aim to ensure that our Catholic faith is woven throughout the whole curriculum. Values of faith, prayer, justice, and service are not confined to RE lessons but are lived in every subject and learning experience.
Living Our Faith
  • Our Catholic faith weaves through daily school life, helping children grow in knowledge, faith, and virtue.
  • We visit our parish church regularly for Masses, liturgies, and celebrations of the Church’s year.
  • Father Anthony works closely with us, leading worship, celebrating class Masses, supporting RE lessons, and guiding our Mini Vinnies (St Vincent de Paul Society).
  • Through Mini Vinnies, pupils put their faith into action by serving others, raising funds, and advocating for justice.
Catholic Social Teaching in Action
We actively teach and live out the principles of Catholic Social Teaching (CST). Pupils learn what each value means and how to put it into practice:
  • Human Dignity – Everyone is Special: Every person matters and is made in God’s image; we show this by respecting othersKS2 Poster CST Human Dignity.
  • The Common Good – Thinking of Everyone: We work together for what benefits all, not just ourselvesKS2 Poster CST ECommon Good.
  • Option for the Poor – Putting People in Need First: We prioritise those who are most vulnerable, supporting charities and those in needKS2 Poster CST Option for the p….
  • Participation – Taking Part: Everyone has a voice and role; pupils join in class, school, parish, and wider community lifeKS2 Poster CST Participation.
  • Peacemaking – Promoting Peace: Pupils act as peacemakers, resolving conflict and building harmony in school and beyondKS2 Poster CST Peacemaker.
  • Solidarity – Showing We Care: We stand with others, especially when they struggle, as one global familyKS2 Poster CST Solidarity.
  • Stewardship – Caring for God’s Gifts: Pupils protect God’s creation by caring for the environment and taking part in eco-projectsKS2 Poster CST Stewardship.
