At St Swithun’s we believe that learning a language enriches the curriculum and provides excitement, enjoyment and challenge for children and teachers.

All children in the school, from Reception through to Year 6, have the opportunity to learn French with our specialist teacher Mrs Adie. They learn to listen, understand, speak and write French using a variety of authentic resources and through stories, songs, rhymes and games. They also learn about culture and other French speaking countries and activities are often linked with other subjects to enhance learning.

We offer a curriculum which is informed by the National Curriculum and the Programmes of Study at Key Stage 2.

Special highlights for pupils in Years 1 and 2 include an annual French breakfast and a French ice-cream stall in their Summer terms, linked with their curriculum topics.

Pupils in Years 5 and 6 have the opportunity to become Language Ambassadors and Leaders, helping to organise whole school events in order to celebrate the variety of cultures and languages represented within our school.
